A caryatid (also spelled Karyatid), is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting, functioning as a pier, column or pilaster an entablature on her head. Across from the Parthenon, is a building called the Erechtheion. The Erechtheion has a porch supported by six caryatid columns. Each column is an individually shaped woman taking the place of a column.
