Indonesian Art - Hanuman or Hanoman
Hanuman, the white monkey general and one of the huge Wanara apes is of divine parentage, the son of the God of the Wind. Amazingly agile, he can fly and fill any space, large or small, performing unusual acts of strength and daring. He uses his physical and mental gifts to help Rama in his just cause and asks for no reward. He is one of the most capitivating and vital characters in the Ramayana story. Hanuman is much beloved by children.
In this wood sculpted version of the Monkey God, Hanuman does indeed fly as he hangs suspended from string and hook. His arms and his flowing sashes are carved of separate pieces of wood which fit into the main body. These can be glued in if desired.
