Indonesian Art - Sumba Motif Blanket

Two cocks are the primary theme of this lovely weaving, hand woven in the Island of Sumba in the eastern archipelago of Indonesia. Cocks are very important in Sumbanese society as offerings, fighters and fortune tellers.

This special supplementary-warp textile in cotton was traditionally prepared by the noblewomen of East Sumba. Known as lau pahudu, this type of textile is woven on a body-tension loom using a continuous warp. The thick cotton supplementary warps are place on top of the ground-weave warps made from finer yarns. Also called a float weaving, because the weft conceals sections of the supplementary warp which float between the design elements on the reverse side. You can see how the reverse side looks in the detail photo on the left in the box above.

Utilizing natural dyes, the base color is red and the complementary colors are cream, slate, persimmon and indigo.
