Indonesian Art - Antique Timor Runner
This old piece (c. 1940) is woven in the warp ikat method, whereby the warp threads are tied off by dye-resisting materials to produce a pattern or decoration after dying with natural dyes. This process is repeated for each additional color. After the dyeing process is finished, the hand spun ramie threads are attached to and woven on a backstrap loom.
The theme of this weaving is the lizard, symbol of faithfulness to the ancestral tradition. The indigo and white shawl has a narrow border of red with yellow stripes and is reversible. The dimensions are 44 inches long X 12 1/2 inches wide.
Hung on the wall as is, framed, or used as a table runner, this would be a unique decoration for home or office.
